The Midwife's Daughter
A heroine for a land whose heroes no longer care
Following a long and bloody war over the right to use magical items, the kingdom
of Runedor is left short of men to run the farms and industry the nation needs. The
female population have been kept oppressed by the threat of sacrifice to a dragon
that lives in the Yevearin Hills. With increased wealth and access to enchanted weapons
from his newly conquered lands, the Runedorian king promises to rid his subjects
of this menace. However, there are many in positions of power who have benefited
from having the creature living within the kingdom, and are prepared to take whatever
steps they see fit to maintain the status-
Ulrich daydreams of fighting monsters and rescuing
princesses, and doesn't realise that as an apprentice blacksmith he is not best equipped
for such a challenge. That is until one day his uncle, a war hero, learns where their
former enemies may have hidden an enchanted sword capable of slaying the Dragon.
Together Ulrich and his uncle set off to retrieve this magical weapon.
Miriam is
from the Runedorian enemy kingdom of Lahbland, and is taken prisoner to be sacrificed
to the dragon. However, she has magical abilities, but has not been trained how to
use them and when her captors learn about them, they offer her a terrible choice.
She can face a slow agonising death or help feed other victims to the dragon. She
remembers her mother predicting that one day she would be saved from such danger,
but for the prediction to come true she must find a midwife’s daughter
